FAQ's about website hosting?
Web hosting allows your website to be accessible to people via the world
wide web. Hosting refers to the service where your website is:
- allocated space on an internet server
- provided with connectivity to the
internet
Why do I need hosting?
Unless your website is on a server and
connected to the internet, it is invisible to
the world.
Who should host my website?
Typical options for hosting your website are
- Your Internet Service Provider (ISP)e.g.
Paradise, ICONZ, TelstraClear
- Your web developer
- An specialist hosting provider i.e FreeParking
- Your own server
We have information about each of these options - please contact
us for our free white paper.
How much space will I need?
If your website has a lot of images then you may need more space on the
server. Simply ask if you are not sure which plan will suit you. Your
developer should be able to tell you how much space your website occupies
or, if your website is not built yet, how much space similar websites to
yours occupy.
What else is included in my hosting fee?
You should ask questions about backup and support. What happens in the
unlikely event of a hacker breaking through the firewall?
Can I move my website to another hosting provider?
Ask your web developer if this is possible. Sometimes software is
developed to run on a particular type of server - Microsoft and Linux are
two of the most common. There may be a good reason for your website software
to use another technology and all the angles need to be considered.
